Anxiety Treatment: GAD and Social Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are unpleasant and can become debilitating if left untreated. Fortunately, there is hope. There are many different treatments that sufferers can go through to make themselves feel better again. Although anxiety might never entirely go away, the symptoms can be reduced to manageable levels, depending on the severity of the anxiety and the reasons behind it.

If you are suffering from anxiety, then it might be that one or more of the following anxiety disorder treatments can help you get your life back.

Self Help

Self-help does not mean being left to fend for yourself when you have anxiety. It is offered under supervision, and it can be the ideal first step to recovery. This is because you don’t have to wait to receive it, and you can begin it right away no matter where you are. Self-help for anxiety relies on resources that you can obtain from your therapist, your doctor, or even a library if need be.

Reading books, watching videos, using workbooks, and talking to those who understand what you are going through will help you to understand your anxiety and begin to know how to deal with it.

Talking Therapy

For some patients with anxiety, talking therapies can be the answer to at least alleviating some of the symptoms. You might find that one to one session with a counselor is ideal for you; you can discuss how you are feeling with someone who understands what you are going through and who can offer useful advice.

Other patients prefer group therapy sessions. They like this because they can listen to other people’s stories, and they know they are not alone in their struggle and how they are feeling. They can also offer their own advice, and this can help calm anxious feelings.

There is also the option of cognitive-behavioral therapy, which investigates how negative thoughts and beliefs affect your anxiety and teach you different ways of coping with your mental health problems.

Medication

Medication for anxiety disorders isn’t going to work for everyone, and it’s not something that doctors like to prescribe first of all – it is better to try other methods of help before taking medication since there can be issues with substance abuse and the side effects can be extremely unpleasant.

However, if medication is deemed to be the best course of action, your doctor will be able to determine the correct number of drugs to take, and which drugs will work best for you. Therefore, you should always follow their instructions to the letter so that you don’t run the risk of making yourself more unwell. Too much of any drug can cause serious illness, and too little will mean you won’t receive all the benefits.

There are a variety of different drugs that have been made to fight anxiety, and it is the expert’s job to know which one is going to suit their patient the best. Some of the drugs you might be offered include antidepressants, Valium, Diazepam, beta-blockers, and tranquilizers.

The Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB)

The SGB is a revolutionary treatment option that has been found to be an effective option for both generalized anxiety disorder treatment and social anxiety treatment. The symptoms of GAD typically are the result of the activation of the sympathetic nervous system, or the ‘fight or flight’ mechanism. The Stellate Ganglion Block is a single injection of local anesthetic that neutralizes a set of nerves in the sympathetic nervous system, bringing the ‘fight or flight’ response back down to normal levels.
